LONDON—A Growing Number of doctors in being the UK warning that the country and its health service facing a renewed health crisis due to rampant Covid-19 infections and a rising number of hospital admissions and deaths.
The warnings, from various big UK medical authorities over the last couple of days, come as government officials have insisted that more limits on public life is not necessary yet, despite minister of Health Sajid Javid warning Wednesday that Covid cases can reach 100,000 per day when we enter the winter period.
To potentially make matters worse, UK experts are now tracking a mutation of the delta variant die could even make the virus more transferable.
The British Medical Association slammed the government’s optimistic perspective on the situation, stating on Wednesday it was “incredibly concerning” that Javid was not, as the association saw it, “willing to take immediate action to save lives and protect the NHS.”
“Especially when we head in winter, when the NHS is in the handles of tackle the biggest backlog of care, with An already exhausted and exhausted labor force”, the added in a statement, in following numerous reports of exhausted primary care workers.
The BMA supported calls, made earlier this week by the NHS Confederation (die organizations in represents the UK healthcare sector) for the government until trigger his “Plan B”, that it had said last month die it would do if Covid cases threatened to have serious health consequences ability Operate.
“The reality today is an unacceptable rate of infections, hospitalizations and deaths, unheard of of in comparable European countries. In comparison met France we have: more than 10 times the number of fallen and almost four times the same number of deaths per million,” according to the BMA.
The UK has taken in between 40,000 and 50,000 new daily infections in the last week. While the number of daily deaths and hospitalizations remain far below earlier peaks in the pandemic thanks to Covid vaccines, data shows these numbers are also rising.
On Thursday, the UK reported 52,009 new cases and 115 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test. In addition, a 959 people were recorded in the hospital, official data shows.
The government has dismissed his concerns over of the health service can handle it. Health Minister Edward Argar told the BBC on Thursday that the NHS is not under “unsustainable pressure”, noting that there were about 95,000 beds in NHS hospitals, with 7,000 occupied by Covid patients and 6,000 currently empty.
“We know how die numbers can rise quickly, that’s why we look at it day by day, hour by hour. But at the moment we do have the ability manage,” he said.
Other experts disagree, saying the data could be worse than it seems.
The British Zoe Covid Study, die Collect and analyze Covid data with help from King’s College London, estimated on Thursday that the number of daily positive tests in the country is a lot higher then government data suggest. The data suggested there were 81,823 new daily symptomatic cases, on average, based on PCR and LFT (lateral flow) test) test dates from up until five days ago. That’s an increase of 17% of 69,993 new daily cases last week.
dr. Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London who runs the study, noted that “with over 80,000 new cases a day the UK is real in problem.”
“This didn’t happen overnight but frustrating our phone calls for An more cautious approach to Covid management has been ignored despite upward trends die we have now reported for several weeks… The UK must act now to prevent the situation from escalating out of control ahead of winter,” he said.
Medical experts also agree that the UK’s vaccination program, die received off to a flying one start back in December 2020, has stalled. Official data shows 79% of the population 12 years and older over is fully vaccinated.
“There are some of developments die to lie behind the dramatic rise in British infections. Compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions such as a mask wearing has declined; the favorable summer season fades; and a new underline of the Delta variant, known as AY.4.2, is increasing modestly,” said JPMorgan Chief European Economist David Mackie in a letter on Thursday.
“But, in U.S view, the main issue is the combination of a stuck main vaccination program, fading vaccine protection and only a modest one start to the booster program.”
The number of fully vaccinated persons in the UK reached 45 million on the start of October, Mackie noted, but by October 19, 45.4 million people was fully vaccinated, “representing an average daily pace over the past several weeks of only 27,600. The main vaccination program has effectively stalled,” he said.
Spector agreed that “the two main reasons we see cases back on the peaks in January is the UK’s flagging vaccine program…and the lifting of most restrictions too early.”
He said the government needed to encourage the unvaccinated to take up shots, and to “simple measures, such as wearing masks on public transport in crowded, poorly ventilated places, avoiding large gatherings indoors and working from home true possible.”
“Now do nothing will just Make it worse. This pandemic is far from over, and though it seems some would rather bury their heads in the sand, Covid-19 and his new variants have different plans.”
