Warzone 1 is now back online, but some key features and maps are still missing

When Activision released Call of Duty: Warzone 2 a few weeks ago, Warzone 1.0 was taken offline temporarily so that developer Raven Software could focus on ensuring the new game worked well. Raven is busy fixing Warzone 2’s flying boats, glitches with infinite money, and frequent crashes, but it has kept its promise: Warzone 1.0 is back online, but it has a new name.

Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera is the new name for Warzone 1. (opens in new tab). It’s pretty much the same Warzone as it was a few weeks ago, but it’s missing some essential parts. There is only one map, Caldera, and two playlists: battle royale Quads and battle royale Solos. All of the weapons, custom classes, and unlocks already in Warzone are still there, but there is no new battle pass and no way to get old battle pass content. Warzone Caldera is a Call of Duty game from before the service game era. It is an island of content with no roadmap or significant updates. A battle royale that can’t be stopped.

Warzone 1

Notably, today’s relaunch has killed the small map category for both Warzone 1 and its sequel, at least for the time being. Fortune’s Keep, a popular small map that replaced Rebirth Island earlier this year, is gone, and Activision has no plans to bring it, Rebirth, or Warzone’s first map, Verdansk, back any time soon.

This is terrible news for a big part of the Warzone community since Fortune’s Keep/Rebirth Island, with its smaller and faster pace, had become their favorite way to play. Small maps and the Resurgence ruleset, which is a type of battle royale where squadmates automatically respawn if at least one player is still alive, have been popular enough for Warzone to keep them in the playlist rotation for the last two years, so it seems strange to get rid of them now. Warzone 2 also doesn’t have a small map option, but Activision has said that fans of small maps can look forward to “exciting developments” in the game’s future seasons.
