Washington blows up Belarus over migrant crisis on Polish border

The United States Department of The state condemned Minsk over tensions on the Polish border, triggered by a new wave of migrants trying to reach the EU. Washington has promised to continue the pressure on Belarusian authorities.

State Department spokesman Ned Price urged Belarus to stop alleged encouragement and facilitation of illegal migration.

“As long as the regime and Belarus refuse to respect his international obligations and commitments, undermines the pace and safety of Europe and continues to repress and abuse people looking for anything more as compared to live in freedom, we will continue to put pressure on Lukashenko and not cut back on our calls for accountability” Price told reporters, according to Reuters.

The remarks came shortly after European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen threatened new sanctions against Belarus over the migrant crisis he described as one “hybrid attack” of Minsk on the block.

The situation of migrants on borders between Belarus and its EU neighbors was complicated over the past a few months after Minsk decided to stop preventing migrants from reaching the EU in retaliation for the sanctions of the block in June. It has also arrived more warmed up on Monday, when a massive caravan of at least 3,000 people approached the Polish border, trying to enter the country.
