Washington extends exemptions from punitive tariffs on Chinese products

The US trade representative’s office announced Wednesday that Washington would extend exemptions from punitive tariffs on some medical products from China.

The trade representative’s office said in a statement that the waivers were due to expire on Nov. 30, but were extended for another three months.

He stressed that these exemptions were first announced in December 2020 and the latest step comes “as part of efforts in course to combat COVID-19”.

The exemptions include 81 medical care products, as the exemptions were extended once in November 2021 and again in June 2022.

The list of medical products in This issue includes hand sanitizer pump bottles, plastic containers for sterilizing wipes, blood pressure monitors, finger oxygen meters, MRI machines, and X-ray tables.

The Trade Representative’s office said it could consider further extensions or changes “as appropriate.”

In 2018, former President Donald Trump’s government imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese products representing the equivalent of $350 billion in annual US imports, denouncing Beijing’s “unfair” trade practices that have led to a massive deficit in the bilateral trade balance.

Washington and Beijing signed a first-stage trade deal in January 2020, under which China pledged to increase its purchases of US products and services by at least $200 billion in the years 2020 and 2021, but the goal has not been achieved between ” Pandemic of covid19.
