India scored a laudable 365 runs in their first innings thanks to a sparkling century from Rishabh Pant and an unbeaten 96 from Sundar. The 21-year-old left-handed’s 96 of 174 balls were just as important on day two as Rishabh Pant’s hundred, but a sudden collapse at the stern left him stuck on the non-striker’s end.
India lost their last three wickets five balls apart, with Ben Stokes (27.4-6-89-4) cleaning the tail without a fuss. Washington’s innings were in complete contrast to his former Indian U-19 teammate Rishabh Pant, who had paved his way in the last 50 runs of his innings.
Washington and Axar Patel (43 of 97 balls) added a priceless 106 runs for the eighth wicket, knocking England out of the competition when the Tourists were sacked for 135 in their second essay, losing the match by innings and 25 runs. With this victory, Team India won the series 3-1 and also reached the final of the ICC test championship. In June it meets New Zealand at Lord’s.
The best thing about the century stand between Axar and Sundar was that they never looked like they were going to blow the bowlers, but instead scored their runs in a fair clip that added 71 runs to the overnight result in 20.4 overs.
Axar met Jack Leach (27-5-89-2), who was clearly bowling on a negative field, as there were far too many in the depth for a bowler to be comfortable. It seemed that England was more intent on saving the borders than the simple singles that both batsmen got in the process. They managed the strike well enough in the course of their partnership.
With the field of play slowing down significantly and the dampness also subsiding, it was comparatively easy to beat James Anderson (25-14-44-3). Both batsmen were at times able to play their shots through the line and negotiate the spinners easily as the pace of the surface had decreased. Washington also played a couple of pull shots when Stokes decided to use the short ball, but the slowness allowed him to negotiate the bouncers comfortably. While Washington hit 10 fours and a six, Axar had five limits and a maximum in his kitten.
But all hell broke loose after Axar went out for 43 and the tail was exposed and the remaining two batsmen Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj were sacked for ducking, leaving Sundar stranded at 96 * at the end of the non-striker.
Previous Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer took their respective Twitter handles and trolled Ishant and Siraj for not being able to stay in the middle and making sure Sundar get those four runs for a career milestone.
Axar, Ishant, and Siraj will next meet up with Washington’s father at an event
But seriously, this 96 * is no less than a hundred, very well played @ Sundarwashi5 ???????? #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/V6qRXBbwfl

Missed a well deserved century but didn’t miss his class demonstration @ Sundarwashi5 .

While Sehwag took a meme from the popular mythological TV series Ramayana, on the other hand Jaffer released a funny meme from the cult scene from the movie 3 Idiots.
