Next-generation Android smartphone makers like Samsung and Google will be able to compete with Apple's Emergency SOS through the Satellite feature now that Qualcomm has revealed intentions to deliver the satellite-based connection to these devices.

Iridium offers Snapdragon Satellite, a two-way satellite-based messaging system. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform will support messaging via satellite connectivity, and handsets implementing the technology will appear in the second half of 2023.

Similar to Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite capability, which is made possible through cooperation with Globalstar, Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon Satellite technology will first be utilized for emergency communications.

Qualcomm also lists SMS texting and connection in isolated, rural, and offshore areas as potential uses for Snapdragon Satellite, indicating that it may have more applications in the future than just responding to crises.

Although Qualcomm claims Snapdragon Satellite will first be used in smartphones, it may also be used in laptops, tablets, cars, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
