What do we know about the system "Patriot" American air defense and missile defense?

US President Joe Biden announced at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington today that the United States will supply Ukraine with one Patriot battery.

And he will train the Ukrainian military in this.

Overview of its production and use

MIM-104 Patriot is a US ground-based self-propelled air defense and missile defense system.

The system is designed to defend against air attack, primarily from ballistic missiles. May be part of a friendly air defense and missile defense system.

It was developed by the American defense company Raytheon. The cost of a single Patriot battery is $1 billion. The price of one missile ranges from 3 to 4 million dollars.

The Patriot system serves in the armies of the United States, Germany, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Spain, Qatar, Kuwait, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Romania, Taiwan, Sweden and Japan.

Poland is counting on the deployment of Patriot complexes, which will be supplied by Germany, on the border with Ukraine.

The base model, equipped with the Standard missile, was made for the Patriot in the early 1980s. It was first used in the Persian Gulf War in 1990-1991. For the first time, it managed to intercept a Soviet-made Iraqi R-17 missile over the territory of Saudi Arabia, then the system underwent many improvements, including the development of its software.

Its components:

Patriot firearms are typically used in a battalion of multiple batteries.

Battery components include:

command center,

The radar detects air targets,

Transport and launch platforms, 4-8 platforms.

antenna mast (communication node),

Interceptor missiles “Ras-2” or “Ras-3”,

Power supply (electric generators).

All these devices are placed on wheeled platforms manufactured by the American company Oshkosh. The PAC-2 interceptor missile is equipped with a non-contact detonator that detonates it near the enemy missile. As for the PAC-3 missile, it is aimed directly at the enemy missile.

Technical Specifications:

The range of the radar is 150 km.

The range of destruction of ballistic targets is 15-22 km.

The maximum target engagement height is 20 km.

The number of missiles placed on one platform is 4 Ras-2 or Ras-3 missiles.

The rocket speed is Mach 4.1 (about 5000 km/h).

The Ras-2 rocket is about 5.3 meters long, 41 centimeters in diameter, and weighs 900 kg.

The Ras-3 rocket is about 4.8 meters long, 25 centimeters in diameter, and weighs 320 kg.

The radar is capable of tracking at least 50 targets and directing at least 5 missiles.

The time required to transfer the system from walking to combat mode is at least 30 minutes.

90 people are required to service the Patriot battery.
