What does the Phillies mean with Didi Gregorius’ free agent for Jean Segura?

The Phillies agreed to sign a one-year deal with free agent Didi Gregorius on Tuesday, as Joel Sherman first said.

Gregorius, 29, has expanded his painful game in the last five seasons with the Yankees becoming much more than a defensive midfielder. He underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2018 season, which cut his New York contract and possibly cut his market value.

Still, Gregoris is a short-term asset for a group of Phillies desperately expected to rise to maturity in 2020. Colleague Jean Segura, who signed a long-term deal in Philadelphia, is now expected to move to second base. Segura said earlier this offseason was open for exchange.

Because longtime Phillies infielder Cesar Hernandez was unavailable, the club had a vacancy in the second Segura could easily slip on. Scott Kingery, who also has experience as a midfielder, is expected to use more in the third key and central field than the second given his proven flexibility.

Gregorius’ career line for his .264 / .313 / .429 career and OPS + from the 99 sins on how good the hitter has become in recent years. He dropped .268 / .335 / .494 with 124 OPS + in a 2018 career-best season, and this bat production raised bWAR to 4.3 for the campaign. After a 2019 crash, it will attempt to return to this form at Citizens Bank Park.

Segura, meanwhile, should be a long-distance defensive second baseman if he moves there, as his solid play has been playing well in recent years.
