The state of Ohio climbed 15 spots in the AP vote and would have made a big deal for No. 1 this week when the Buckeyes avoided a stunning 84-71 upset against low Minnesota on Sunday. Chris Holtmann’s team has already beaten Cincinnati, Villanova, North Carolina and Penn State and is the only loss.
Kentucky, meanwhile, had its fair share of ups and downs. The Wildcats made a statement on the first night by hitting the preseason no. 1 Michigan State. Kentucky took the crown as the nation’s first team next week and responded with an amazing home loss to an Evansville team that has already suffered four defeats in Kentucky’s win. John Calipari’s team also went back to the Utah Valley, started late against Georgia Tech and led only to the tournament in a loss to an inexperienced Utah earlier this week.
With recent sputters in mind, Saturday’s matchup between contenders brings a greater sense of urgency than if both teams were cruises heading to the CBS Sports Classic. The winner will consolidate his ranking as a top team in the coming weeks and the loser will have to pick up the pieces and recharge as the new calendar year awaits.
