What made Bouanani turn away from France and embrace Algeria?

French-Algerian footballer Badr Eddine Bouanani has made the decision to relinquish his French sports nationality in favour of representing the Algerian national team. The talented 18-year-old, who plays for Nice, has caught the eye of Algerian national coach Jamal Belmadi, who has been closely following Bouanani since his impressive performance during the Championship of the Mediterranean Games, which were held in Oran last year. Bouanani has expressed a desire to represent his parents’ and grandparents’ country, despite previously playing for French teams. The decision has been met with positive reactions in the Algerian press, with some citing a desire to play alongside Riyad Mahrez and leave behind racism in Europe as factors behind Bouanani’s decision. Belmadi is said to be pleased with Bouanani’s decision and has already contacted the player’s father to coordinate with the president of the Algerian Football Federation to complete the necessary procedures for Bouanani to play for Algeria. Bouanani will join the likes of Ryan Ait Nuri, Hossam Aouar, and Fares Chaibi, as French-Algerian talents who have recently opted to represent Algeria internationally.
