Who is Alain Nasreddine? New Jersey Davids call John Hynes temporary replacement

Dave Jersey Devils on Tuesday named assistant coach Alain Nasreddine a temporary coach shortly after John Hynes was relieved of his duties as coach.

Hynes, who had been the 17th coach in Devils franchise history, gave control of the bench to his assistant since his hiring in June 2015. Otherwise, Devils coaching staff remains the same – with the exception of the move. by Peter Horachek in a job as an assistant to Nasreddine.

Here’s what you need to know about the Devils’ interim coach:

Where’s Alain Nasreddine?

Nasreddine, 44, grew up in Montreal, Que. and played for the Drummondville QMJHL Voltigeurs and Chicoutimi Sagueneens in junior hockey.

Alain Nasreddine played in the NHL?

Nasreddine played 74 NHL games in his career as a defender between 1998-2008. He was part of the Florida Panthers’ first-round pick in 1993 (round six, pick No. 135) but didn’t find his way to a big league with his first franchise. He would get his shot with the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 10, 1998, against – you guessed it – New Jersey Devils, but ended up with the Montreal Canadiens by the end of this season and played just 15 games in total.

The blueliner bounced from team to team throughout the NHL career, but found a consistent home as a part of the Pittsburgh Penguins between 2003-08. He bounced between the AHL Wilkes-Barre / Scranton and the Penguins roster, playing 44 NHL games in 2006-07 – the most in his NHL career.

How long has Alain Nasreddine coached?

Nasreddine’s connection to the Pittsburgh organization did not end when his days were playing out. Subsequently, Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero – who now manages the Devils – hired Nasreddine as an assistant coach with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in August 2010. The coach of that time? No other than John Hynes.

Nasreddine, Hynes and Shero all stayed together until the trio moved to New Jersey in a succession of moves to the 2015 offshore.
