Will the last eight years be the warmest on record?

Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Meteorological Center, said that the last eight years could be the warmest in the history of meteorology on Earth.

“According to estimates, the last eight years are likely to be the warmest in history. We will see this in the period from January 15 to 20 next year. This is a feature of global warming,” the expert said at a press conference. at the Rossiya Segodnya agency.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said earlier that global temperatures could rise by 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of this century if countries do not take drastic measures as part of a strategy to reduce carbon emissions. The main agreement in this area is the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which requires global temperature rise to be limited to more than 1.5°C and a maximum of 2°C by 2100.

Most of the countries on the agenda of the climate conference have adopted programs to achieve this goal. That is, achieving a balance between emissions of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, etc.) and their absorption through technological solutions (renewable energy sources, electrification of transport, capture and storage of carbon dioxide in industry, hydrogen), as well as with the help of natural ecosystems ( class I forests). Russia plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
