With an Arab presence.. (FIFA) announces preliminary lists of nominees for (The Best) Awards

Berlin: Today, Thursday, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) revealed the preliminary list of players nominated for (The Best) award for the best player in the world in 2022. The Argentine magician, Lionel Messi, the star of the French team Paris Saint-Germain, was in tops the list, as he looks like the favorite to receive the award, after leading his country to a World Cup win in Qatar last year. Messi was among 13 other players on the list announced by FIFA, which also includes French striker Karim Benzema, Real Madrid’s top scorer, winner of the 2022 Ballon d’Or, and Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona’s Spanish striker, two times crowned “The best ” prize, and the French. Kylian Mbappé, winger of Paris Saint-Germain. The roster also included Norwegian Erling Haaland, Manchester City’s top scorer, Brazilian duo Neymar and Vinicius Jr., PSG and Real Madrid players respectively, and Croatian veteran Luka Modric, Real Madrid midfielder. On the other hand, Egyptian national team stars Mohamed Salah and Moroccan Ashraf Hakimi, players of Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, were the only representatives of the Arabs in the preliminary list announced by FIFA, which also included Argentine Julian Alvarez, Jude Bellingham from England, Kevin De Bruyne from Belgium and Sadio Mane from Senegal. Meanwhile, Argentine Lionel Scaloni, who led his country to a World Cup win for the third time in their history, was nominated for the best coaching award, alongside France’s World Cup winner Didier Deschamps 2018 and runner-up of the World Cup in Qatar, the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid, and the Spanish Josep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City. Morocco’s Walid Regragui was also nominated to win the best coach award, after leading the team (Atlas Lions), becoming the first Arab and African team to reach the semi-finals in World Cup history. In terms of women’s awards, Barcelona striker Alexa Potias will have the opportunity to retain her title, which she crowned in 2021, but there will be stiff competition from England’s Kira Walsh, who won the European 2022 with her country. Among the candidates also stands out the name of the Norwegian Ada Hegerberg, the German attacker Alexandra Pope and the American Alex Morgan. FIFA is expected to unveil the final lists for each category in early February, knowing that the awards ceremony will be held on the 27th of the same month. (dpa)
