Witness the Epic 60th Anniversary Celebration of Doctor Who with Special Episodes and Reunions

Doctor Who Celebrates its 60th Anniversary with Special Episodes and Reunions

Doctor Who

In anticipation of its 60th anniversary, Doctor Who is bringing back David Tennant, one of its beloved actors. Last year, fans witnessed Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regenerate into Tennant’s familiar face, now known as the Fourteenth Doctor. This incarnation of the Time Lord will lead three special airing episodes in late November and early December. In addition to these episodes, fans from the Classic Who era can expect something truly exciting to celebrate the milestone.

Tales of the TARDIS: A Special Six-Part Series

Starting November 1st, the BBC will release a six-go series called Tales of the TARDIS on its streaming platform, iPlayer. These episodes will reunite “beloved Doctor Who duos” in a special TARDIS, where they will reflect on their adventures together. In the process, they will discover something new, providing viewers with fresh insights into their timeless pairings. New scenes will be integrated with classic episodes to create a feature-length omnibus episode. Here are the duos that will be featured:

  • Maureen O’Brien as Vicki and Peter Purves as Steven
  • Frazer Hines as Jamie and Wendy Padbury as Zoe
  • Katy Manning as Jo and Daniel Anthony as Clyde
  • Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Janet Fielding as Tegan
  • Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri
  • Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor and Sophie Aldred as Ace

Except for Daniel Anthony’s Clyde, all the duos come from Doctor Who’s classic years. Clyde is known to fans as one of the main characters from the spinoff series, The Sarah Jane Adventures. However, he did spend time with Katy Manning’s Jo in the story arc “Death of The Doctor,” which also featured Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Last year, Manning, Peter Davison, Janet Fielding, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, and Sophie Aldred reprized their roles in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, “The Power of The Doctor.” Each pairing will reunite with their respective Doctors, with Vicki and Steven being companions to William Hartnell’s First Doctor, Jamie and Zoe with Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor, and Jo with Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor.

Exclusive Release on iPlayer

For now, Tales of the TARDIS will only be available on iPlayer. Showrunner Russell T. Davies, who co-wrote these episodes with Phil Ford and Pete McTighe, mentioned on Instagram that there is “no news whether these will ever be available abroad.” While Disney+ subscribers outside the United Kingdom and Ireland will have access to new Doctor Who episodes, and BritBox houses classic Doctor Who episodes in the United States, it’s uncertain if non-UK-based fans will never get to see these stories through official means. Davies shared the following statement about Tales of the TARDIS:

“The word Whoniverse was invented by fans, so it’s time to give it official status. And TALES OF THE TARDIS is one of the greatest delights of my career – to see old Doctors and companions reunited, still fighting the good fight, is a perfect way to celebrate the Doctor’s 60th birthday!”

Tales of the TARDIS promises to be a delightful treat for Classic Who fans. Alongside David Tennant’s episodes and the audio productions by Big Finish, Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary has been well covered this year. Notably, the anniversary episodes will also feature the return of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble and Neil Patrick Harris as The Celestial Toymaker. Additionally, fans will witness the Fourteenth Doctor regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor, who will lead their first full episode in December.

David Tennant’s first complete onscreen appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor, “The Star Beast,” will be available on Disney+ on November 25. This will be followed by “Wild Blue Yonder” on December 2 and “The Giggle” on December 9. Check out our 2023 TV schedule to stay updated on the remaining small-screen content coming out this year.
