World Junior Championships: Team Guide for the Under-20 Championship 2020

The IIHF World Youth Championship, also known as World Juniors, is the first hockey prospect event to give us a feel of the intensity of the playoffs in the center of the NHL era. For many, it is the closest thing hockey fans have to Madness Madness, except for the fact that tournaments have kids locked up for the NHL.

WJC 2020: Top 5 Stories 20 players to watch

The 2020 World Junior Championships are filled with tomorrow’s NHL sports. Last year’s tournaments were led by Jack Hughes of the United States and Kaapo Kakko of Finland, who now plays for the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers respectively. This year Canada’s Alexis Lafreniere and Quinton Byfield are expected to reach 1-2 in the NHL 2020 draft.

But who will shine? Which team will play Cinderella and who will be tripping? In the end, which countries will reach the podium? Stories make this a must-watch event across Canada and the United States.

Here’s a one-off starting oil for everything you need to know about competing nations and what to watch for.

United States

Last January, the Americans reached a goal of winning their second gold in three years – reinforcing their position as the dominant lower power in North America and setting the stage for another gold medal race in 2020.

What’s the only thing different about this year’s team? It’s young, but understandably so. The birth year of 2001 has long been regarded as the most talented team in the country’s history, and the NHL team validated it by taking nine records from the US National Team Development Program in the first round of the 2019 draft. Ten players of this current roster were born 2001, making them the largest team with yet another year of global eligibility for young people. By comparison, only seven of the 23 players a year ago had another year before the cut-off age, and in 2018 that number was six.

This team has two important strengths – score and score. Among the pipes, the potential cable-to-cable starter will be the Florida Panthers’ first wheel Spencer Knight, who was next to unbeatable for Boston College and had many international successes. To support it will be two capable of doing so Isaiah Saville (VGK) and Dustin Wolf (CGY). each with experience on the international stage.

MORE: Calgary Flames, USA Hockey netminder Dustin Wolf making a name for himself

At the front, the offense will be center-regulated Trevor Zegras (ANA) and Alex Turcotte (LAK) – two first turns from last year and two from the younger side among Americans. Expect to see each anchor its own rating line, with a combination of shooters such as Arthur Kaliyev (LAK), Cole Caufield (MTL), Oliver Wahlstrom (NYI) and Bobby Brink (PHI) next to them. As for the sleepers, the little artilleryman Nick Robertson (TOR) has terrified the OHL and almost carried the Americans to Hlinka Gold in 2018.

The defense offers the standard mix of fast players like Cam York (PHI) and Jacques Jones (NYR) and Matisse Samuel (BUF), natural two-way type. The most important member of Team USA’s blue line is the charming prospect of the New York Rangers K’Andre Miller, which should be the group blocker and match the top lines.

Russia

If it were possible to secure a favorite to win a highly competitive Group B, then Russia should have a slight advantage. Not only do they have the best stretch in the tournament at Yaroslav Askarov and 2020 budget colleagues Amir Miftakhov, but their promising top scoring lines consist of NHL privileged prospects that have provided defensive skills at various U20 tournaments leading to juniors worldwide.

In one line, they can develop two double threat wings Gregory Denisenko (FLA) and Paul Dorofeev (VGK) with two-way center Ivan Morozov, big body Dmitry Voronkov (CBJ) or the beautiful team Alexander Khovanov (MIN) between them. The next unit is probably a combination of goal-scoring Yegor Sokolov, two-way speed Cyril Marchenko (CBJ) and abrasive wing Vasily Pokolzin (VAN). These players seem to complement each other, and their compliance with defensive coverage makes it difficult to reflect on the attacks.

The defense is mobile and plays natural, so outside Alexander Romanov (MTL), don’t expect too much playmaking and end-to-end burble from them. Two of the most complete t-shirts are Yego Zamula (PHI), who plays for the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL, and Daniel Masjul (NJD), who is one of the best defenders of the tournament. The Russians have not won the gold medal since 2011, but this is the best team they have sent since.

Canada

If Canada gets tired of criticizing for not getting as many transfers as previous generations of younger players, it should at least console the fact that other competing nations in the last decade have worked very hard to build teams specifically designed to reflect aggressive style. of Canadians.

This year’s edition looks bigger and more sophisticated ahead, and they have chosen to fill the blue line with faster players like Tim Smith (NJD), Calen Anderson (PIT) and Jamie Drysdale (draft 2020) who can work together to solve last year’s woes with the power game

The front lines are loaded with centers that are used to moving to the wing from previous international leagues. Biggest award for Canadians was landing the Arizona Coyote phenomenon Barek Hayton, the fifth overall pick of 2018 that can bring the NHL experience to the lineup.

WORLD JUNIORS: Canada’s Complete Program, Results

It can gather a multitude of forward-threatening elites who can play down the middle or sideline, that is, the speedster Joe Veleno (DET), Akil Thomas (LAK) and Dylan Cozens (BUF). One of the biggest surprises for Canadians this year is joining four eligible first-year plans that are 18 years or younger – Alexis Lafrenier, centers Quinton Byfield and Dawson Mercer and the defender Jamie Drysdale. Everything is expected to go high this year.

On the net, Team Canada has no bonafide cap bearing the Knight or Askarov pedigree. but that was also the case during most of the five consecutive golds of the previous decade. Joel Hofer (STL) WHL’s Portland Winterhawks seem to be the number one favorite and have a lot of experience tackling a large number of shots per game – albeit to Canadian major junior and with no international experience. Expecting to support him is Olivier Rodrigue (EDM), who has played in IIHF events before and double overager Nico Daws (draft 2020), which was the surprise except for the camp.

The Czech Republic

This year’s guests are desperately trying to stop the futility of global juniors for almost two decades. Outside of a bronze medal in 2005, the Czechs have never finished higher than fourth since winning gold back-to-back in 2000 and 2001. It is amazing given that they have won 2016 Ivan Hlinka and produced multiple firsts turns in recent NHL drafts. This year’s team will have multiple prospects with NHL entries, as well as two possible first-round draft picks in 2020 Jaromir Pytlik and Jan Misak. They have stimulating playmakers and decomposition threats throughout the composition, especially the speedster Jakub Lauko (BOS), forward Ian Jenick (ARI) and wing Karel Plasek (VAN).

If the Czechs end up smashing their metal, they will probably have a goal to thank for it. The duo of the 2019 Juniors World Hero Lucas Dostal (ANA) and the ability to back up Lucas Paric (LAC) – which was fantastic in the last U18 worlds – are expected to provide the Czech Republic with consistency and the ability to steal a game or two from a favored superpower.

The defense should contribute to a committee as it has no legal number 1 or cap. The only NHL winner is right Martin Hugo Has (WAS), which is sized and plays naturally, but also plays well and can be used in power play. There are two WHL-led training with promises, both of which are eligible for the first year of the project in 2020 – Simon Kubicek of the Seattle Thunderbirds and Radek Kukerik of Saskatoon blades.

Moritz Seiderhttps: //images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/17/e7/moritz-seider-germany-122419-getty-ftrjpeg_fwekzz7dwg711m16xu9g5fwnp.jpg? T = 963336671 & w = 500 & quality = 80

Germany

The new addition to this year’s team with the victory of the Division 1A U20 World Championship last December, the Germans will not have it easy on the milling machine known as Group B.

What they lack in depth and experience is offset by an extraordinarily superior level of prospects, led by the defender. Moritz Sider (DET), tip Dominic Bokk (CAR) and the original outlook plan for 2020 Tim Stojo, which should center the top line. Adding some depth to the front seats of Germany is a pair of 2002-born left wing feuds. Lucas Rachel and J.J. Peterka. The lines have not necessarily disappeared since then. Sherbrooke Center Taro Jents, who was invited to the Vegas camp in the offseason, is versatile for all situations and must be the second man. It may be hanging on a wing Justin Schutz (FLA), a powerful two-way type with very good speed and a powerful step that can stick to a telephone booth or explode into open ice for a finish near the net.

The defense and goalkeeper will be put through a lot of stress. Although Seider has shown that he is capable of carrying a defense and playing more than 30 minutes a game, he should get help from ready-made switches such as Simon Gnyp, who managed the U18 team last year as well Leon Huttl and natural defensive backs Maximilian Glottle. All three are eligible for the 2020 plan. Tobias Ancicka he was one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers for last year’s draft and had to take the share of minutes between the pipes.

Finland

The firewalls are pretty deep in front of Kakko’s graduates. after all, he took home the crown last year with top Jesperi Kotkaniemi center in the NHL. However, the biggest hit on this roster is the loss of two-way center Anton Lundell, a top 2020 prospect plan injured a few weeks back.

A serious force for the Finns will be on the wing. They have several quick goalscorers Sambo Radha (COL), Eemil Erholtz, Matisse Macheli (ARI), and Joonas Oden. Their best player at the crucial moment will be the center Rasmus Kupari (LAK), who should anchor the top line and lead the power play.

The defense is on the smaller side, but has a trio of elite playmakers – Anthony Honka (CAR), Ville Heinola (WIN) and Toni Utunen (VAN). Lassi Thomson, a first round of Ottawa in 2019, is a high volume shooter that fights with confidence. What the team lacks is a physical presence or a clearer aspect and a lack of size can lead to an unnecessary foul stick.

On target, the Finns are likely to rely Justus Annunen (COL) as their primary starter, with Jasper Patrikainen and Kari Piiroinen relegated to backup roles. The Finns won gold in the margin in 2016, but it will be difficult for Annunen to replicate last year’s dominant performance from Sabers Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s perspective. To his credit, Annunen was huge for Finland at the 2018 U18 World Championships when he defeated Knight and the United States in the gold medal game.

World Juniors 2020: Canada, USA with the best odds of getting gold

Luca Hollenstein and Akira Schmidhttps: //images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/3a/21/luca-ollenstein-akira-schmid-switzerland-122419-getty-ftrjpeg_t2mye1f06eky1hlhpk9k3qogn.jpg? T = 965775719 & w = 500 & quality = 80

Switzerland

Every year, the prevailing view of Switzerland in the world juniors is that they are always good at pulling at least one upset or at least coming close to it. Last year, they used a timely score from Yannick Bruschweiler and a solid finish Luca Hollenstein to lift the favored Swedes to the metal round before falling asleep in the semifinals and the bronze medal. Like last year, this team of 2020 does not have a superstar that it can support, but they have a handful of quality two-way forward and mobile defenseman who can handle the physical game.

One aspect of the roster that should not be overlooked is how many players are experienced in the North American leagues. NHL program Valentin Nussbauer (ARI) is one of the many basics ahead of last year’s team and plays for Shawinigan in the QMJHL. Others playing include the 2020 draft Simon Knak (WHL) and wings born in 2000 Gilian Kohler (WHL), Cyan Soup (OHL) and Matthew Verboon (ECAC).

Switzerland will not face Canada or the United States in a team game for the second time in three years and will not mind that their turn is full of prospects used for either bigger or smaller ice sheets – familiar to them different ways of playing between Europeans and the lake.

Both Hollenstein and Akira Schmidt (NJD) will be back on the net for the Swiss, with the smaller, faster Hollenstein expected to be the starting starter. Every goalkeeper will have the luxury of a healthy, clean defense on their front, like Nikos Gross (NYC) and Tim Berni (CBJ) return after playing crucial roles for last year’s team.

Rasmus Sandinhttps: //images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/10/d5/rasmus-sandin-sweden-122419-getty-ftrjpeg_nv12kc3hoefn1izugwfpn66ak.jpg? T = 966788223 & w = 500 & quality = 80

Sweden

If they gave gold for a preliminary round of play, the Swedes would have the most successful junior program in tournament history. Unfortunately, they do not seem to bring the winning ways from the team march to the metal round. They will try to erase memories of last year ‘s QF loss to Switzerland and the good news is the only tradition they will have to face in Group A will be the Finns,.

Sweden’s 2020 team’s strength lies in its blue line – featuring a tournament – top five turns start with 2018 draftee Rasmus Sandin, who will soon fit the Toronto Maple Leafs this year and was one of the best defenders in the AHL. There is also a trio of the top 31 options from the 2019 draft in double-sided beasts Philip Broberg (EDM), Victor Sondström (ARI), and Tobias Bjornfot (LAK). However, the team’s most impressive defender in puk skills is right Neil Luddquist (NYC), one of the most productive under 20 scorers in SHL history. Head coach Tomas Monten will have great flexibility in manning his points in the power game.

The group ahead does not have a superstar, though the prospects for the 2020 plan Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz have the potential to dominate this tournament in the same way that they did to lead the Swedes to gold in the last Under 18 World Championships. the question is whether they are ready to impose their wills on 17 year olds. If youngsters struggle to deliver, the weight is likely to fall on the shoulders of Vancouver’s prospect. Nils Hoglander, a gifted scorer Samuel Fagemo (LAK), and two-way centers Jacob Olofsson (MTL) and David Gustafsson (WIN).

The goalkeeper is usually a force for the Swedes and all signs point to the backstop born in 2001 Hugo Alnefeldt (TBL) that serve as their prime starter. It was among the pipes when the Swedes destroyed Askarov and Russia in the gold medal game at the U18 Worlds last year.

Kazakhstan
