The sea-view side of a condominium tower on the beach collapsed in the Miami-area small town of Surfside early Thursday morning, trapping residents in rubble and twisted metal and sending a cloud of debris in the whole neighborhood.
scores of rescue units rushed to the partially collapsed building and firefighters were seen pulling survivors out of the concrete debris.
Santo Mejil, 50, told the Miami Herald that his wife called him from the building, where he worked as a helper for an old woman.
“He said he heard a big explosion. he felt like an earthquake, “Mejil told the newspaper. He said that in later she called him and said rescuers were bringing her down.
The authorities still didn’t have a word on victims or details of how lot of people lived in the building.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue was conducting search and rescue operations and said in a tweet that more of 80 units were “on scene with assistance from the Municipality fire departments “.
“We are on the scene is still a lot active”said Sergeant Marian Cruz of the Surfside Police Department. “What I can tell you is that building it is twelve floors. The whole back side of the building It fell apart”.

Victor Cohen, who lives nearby, told the WPLG television station that building was undergoing a major renovation when the oceanfront wing “collapsed” like a pancake. “
Teams of firefighters walked through the rubble, picking up up survivors and transport them from the wreck.
The collapse left a number of unit in the part still in feet of the building exposed. The television footage still showed bunk beds, tables and chairs left inside the damaged apartments. The air conditioner units hung in some places of the building, where the threads now dangled.
Police blocked nearby streets and scores of fire and rescue vehicles, ambulances and auto police invaded the area.
