Zelensky accuses Russia of committing various forms of terrorism after taking presidency of Security Council

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the “failure” of the United Nations, with Russia assuming today, Saturday, the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of April.

“It is hard to imagine anything demonstrating (more than) the complete failure of such institutions,” Zelensky said in his evening address.

He also continued: “There is no form of terrorism that Russia has not practiced,” calling for the reform of international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council.

And he stressed that this “reform, which is clearly long overdue, includes stopping a terrorist state from destroying the world… Terrorists must lose, they must take responsibility for terrorism, and they must not assume the presidency anywhere,” as reported by Agence France-Presse.

And the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, in he had previously considered that the Russian presidency of the UN Security Council was a slap in the face to the international community, urging, through his Twitter account, the current members of the Council to face any Russian attempt to abuse this presidency.

led by Lavrov

However, these criticisms have not stopped Moscow from confirming that its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will lead its delegation to the United Nations this month, succeeding Mozambique.

“Another important event of the Russian presidency is the open high-level discussion of the Security Council on effective multilateralism upholding the principles of the UN Charter… This meeting will be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman. Maria Zakharova told reporters on Thursday.

Zakharova noted that Lavrov also plans to chair a discussion session on the Middle East on April 25.

For her part, White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre commented on Thursday, “We expect Russia to continue to use its headquarters to spread disinformation and attempt to divert attention from its attempts to justify its actions.” in Ukraine and war crimes committed by members of its armed forces”.

He also added that “a country that blatantly violates the UN Charter and invades its neighbor has no place on the Security Council.”

April Fool

Similarly, the three Baltic countries, which strongly support Ukraine, considered Russia’s assumption of the presidency of the United Nations Security Council to be an “April fool’s joke”.

For its part, Russia tells the United Nations that it is facing the “collective West” that has prevented it from dealing with countries of the world since the start of its military attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

The first meeting of the Security Council under the Russian presidency will take place on Monday morning, but it will only include the usual closed-door discussions on this month’s work programme. The meeting will be followed, as usual, by a press conference for the new head of this body, the Russian ambassador Vasily Nebenzia.
