Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on his country’s impeachment campaign on Tuesday, saying the decisions were necessary.
As he said in his daily speech video, “We want decisions that hand us tanks to strengthen our country’s defense.”
“Russian forces are stepping up efforts to attack Bakhmut – in the east of the country -“, he added.
Today, Kiev announced the dismissal of five regional governors and four assistant ministers from their posts after a corruption scandal involving army equipment was revealed.
Among the officials who have resigned are Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov, in charge of logistical support for the armed forces, Deputy Director of the Presidential Administration Kirillo Tymoshenko and Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksiy Simonenko.
The government representative in parliament, Taras Melnichuk, announced that the governors of the Dnipropetrovsk (middle) regions Valentin Reznichenko, Zaporizhya (south) Oleksandr Starukh, Sumy (north) Dmytro Jivitsky, Kherson (south) Iaroslav Yanushevich and of the capital, Kyiv Oleksi Kuleba, will leave office.
In addition, the Ukrainian deputy defense minister in charge of supplying the forces with food and equipment resigned this morning, due to allegations of “corruption”, which he and the ministry believe are unfounded.
A statement on the site web The defense ministry said Vyacheslav Shapovalov’s resignation was a “worthy act” that would help maintain confidence in the ministry.
The Ukrainian president had previously pledged to fight corruption at all levels amid a series of allegations of corruption and suspicious practices.
Zelensky’s pledge came amid allegations of high-level corruption, including a report on questionable methods of military procurement.
