Zelinsky: American Abrams tanks will keep us on the road to victory

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday that the US decision to send Abrams tanks to his country is “an important step on the road to victory,” expressing his thanks to US President Joe Biden.

Zelensky wrote in a tweet on Twitter: “Thank you, Joe Biden, for the new and strong decision to supply Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Grateful to the Americans for their support.”

Biden’s decision came hours after Berlin announced its agreement to deliver German Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

decisive role

The Ukrainian presidency also believed that the heavy Western tanks that the United States and its Western allies, led by Germany, agreed to send to the Ukrainian army would play a “decisive role in our future victory” over Russian forces.

Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential administration, said: “This is a historic day. It is one of those days that will be decisive for our future victory.”

“Most importantly, this is just the beginning. We need hundreds of tanks,” he added.

NATO welcomes

In turn, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Biden’s announcement of plans to supply these tanks to the Ukrainian military, saying, “I very much welcome the leadership role of President Biden and the U.S. in supplying Abrams tanks to Ukraine”.

Stoltenberg added on Twitter that NATO allies are united in supporting Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

He also went on to say that the American Abrams tanks, together with the British Challenger tanks and the German Leopard tanks, could make a major change in the fight against Russia.

very dangerous

On the other hand, the Russian embassy in Berlin called Germany’s decision to supply Ukraine with Leopard tanks “very dangerous”.

And the “Sputnik” news agency quoted the embassy as saying that Germany’s decision takes the conflict to a “new level of confrontation”.

German approval

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has agreed to send Leopard tanks in Ukraine, granting permission for export.

He has declared in a statement that this decision “comes as a continuation of our well-known support for Ukraine as much as possible. We are moving in closely coordinated manner internationally”.

Scholz also indicated that in Germany was training Ukrainian forces, adding that Berlin would also supply logistical materials and ammunition, as well as 14 Leopard tanks.

Berlin’s decision represented a via free for other European countries that have Leopard tanks and want to supply them to Ukraine, but for this they needed the approval of Germany, led by Poland and Norway.

For many months, Zelensky has been asking the West to supply his forces with Western heavy tanks, which he achieved today.
