- [Payment Expansion]: Walmart will begin accepting Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other NFC-based tap-to-pay methods across all U.S. stores by the end of 2026.
- [Phased Rollout]: The implementation starts in Arkansas on August 24, 2026, with specific dates set for California, Texas, and the Northeast through October.
Nationwide NFC Adoption at Walmart
Walmart officially announced on August 21, 2026, that it will begin accepting Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other NFC-based “Tap to Pay” methods. This decision follows a decade-long holdout where the retailer prioritized its own ecosystem to maintain control over transaction data and avoid third-party fees. According to the official announcement, the company plans to complete the nationwide rollout to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.
The initial phase of this transition begins on August 24, 2026, at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. The first stores to receive the update are located in Arkansas. As the company updates its checkout technology, millions of customers will finally have the option to use their preferred mobile wallet instead of relying solely on the retailer’s proprietary app.
State-by-State Implementation Schedule
Walmart has established a phased schedule to bring NFC payments to different regions. Following the Arkansas launch, California and the West Coast are scheduled to start on September 10, 2026. Texas locations will follow on September 17. The rollout schedule indicates that stores in Northeastern states will begin accepting these payment methods by October 12, 2026.
While the merchant expands its physical payment options, the move addresses years of consumer requests for more flexible checkout experiences. This integration is expected to streamline the checkout process, especially for shoppers who have already moved their credit and debit cards into digital wallets for improved speed and convenience at the point of sale.
Digital Wallet Integration and Proprietary Systems
Customers will gain the ability to add Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards directly into their native Apple and Google digital wallets. Despite the addition of these third-party options, Walmart Pay will not be discontinued. The retailer’s QR-code-based payment system will coexist with the new tap-to-pay options at register terminals.
The expansion of NFC support extends beyond the main store registers. Walmart-branded fuel stations are also part of the technology upgrade. Support for “Tap to Pay” at these fuel locations is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, marking the final stage of the retailer’s payment system overhaul.
