Why Tony DiNozzo Left NCIS: Michael Weatherly’s Exit Explained

  • Professional Transition: Michael Weatherly left NCIS after 13 seasons, citing creative burnout and a sense that Tony DiNozzo’s character arc had reached a natural end.
  • Narrative Departure: The character exited the team to raise his daughter, Tali, following the presumed death of Ziva David in Israel.

Michael Weatherly portrayed Special Agent Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo Jr. for 13 consecutive seasons, becoming a central figure in the long-running procedural. The character first appeared on television screens in 2003 during the JAG episodes “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown.” These episodes served as the backdoor pilot for the team that would eventually be led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

The Decision to Depart in 2016

Weatherly officially ended his tenure on the show in 2016. He explained that his departure was driven by creative burnout and a feeling that he had explored all facets of the character. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Weatherly indicated that the timing felt right for a new chapter in his career as the role had reached a natural conclusion.

Immediately after leaving the Major Case Response Team, Weatherly transitioned to another CBS production. He took on the lead role in the legal drama Bull, which remained on the air for six seasons. This move allowed the actor to lead his own series while staying within the network’s ecosystem.

How Tony DiNozzo Left the Team

The writers crafted a departure storyline that prioritized DiNozzo’s personal growth and family responsibilities. In the series narrative, Tony DiNozzo learned of the existence of his daughter, Tali, following the presumed death of Ziva David during an attack in Israel. Faced with the sudden responsibility of fatherhood, DiNozzo chose to resign from his position at NCIS to care for his child.

While the character moved away from the active investigation team, Weatherly has not completely severed ties with the franchise. He made a surprise cameo in Season 21 of the main series. His appearance occurred during a tribute episode dedicated to the character Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, following the passing of actor David McCallum.

The Future of Tony and Ziva

The story of Anthony DiNozzo is set to continue in a new format. Paramount+ has officially greenlit a spin-off series titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva. According to Variety, this new production will feature both Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, reuniting the popular pairing for a fresh set of adventures in Europe. This project marks a significant return to the franchise for Weatherly after nearly a decade since his original departure.
