HBO has officially announced that Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny Weasley for the second season of its upcoming Harry Potter television series. Hill succeeds Gracie Cochrane, who portrayed the youngest Weasley sibling during the production of the show’s first season.
The transition marks a significant shift for the series as it prepares for its adaptation of “The Chamber of Secrets.” According to reporting from TVLine, Cochrane’s departure is attributed to “unforeseen circumstances.” Despite the recast, Cochrane’s performance is still expected to appear in Season 1, which is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026.
Season 2 Casting and Character Additions
The casting of Bonnie Hill brings a unique connection to the franchise’s history, as she shares a first name with Bonnie Wright, the actress who played Ginny Weasley across all eight original films. While Hill steps into the role for the character’s expanded narrative arc in the second year, she is joined by several other major additions to the ensemble.
Kit Harington has been confirmed to play Gilderoy Lockhart, the fame-seeking Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Harington replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was previously in contention for the part but reportedly exited due to scheduling conflicts. The production has also finalized key roles for the “Chamber of Secrets” storyline, including:
- Lenny Rush: Cast as the voice and motion-capture performer for Dobby the house-elf.
- Billy Barratt: Cast as the young Tom Riddle, the memory of the future Lord Voldemort.
These casting developments arrive while the first season, focused on “The Philosopher’s Stone,” remains the primary focus for the late 2026 launch.
