As HBO prepares for its December 25, 2026, premiere of the new Harry Potter television series, actor Nick Frost has revealed he received a personal “spiritual thumbs up” from the family of the late Robbie Coltrane regarding his portrayal of Rubeus Hagrid.
The portrayal of the beloved half-giant is a key element for the reboot. During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Frost shared that the blessing came through a close mutual connection.
Frost explained that his best friend, Danny, is close with Coltrane’s family. Through this connection, the family reportedly conveyed that Coltrane—who portrayed Hagrid in all eight original films before his passing in 2022—was a fan of Frost’s work and would have been pleased with him taking on the role. This emotional endorsement helps bridge the legacy of the original films with the new direction of the HBO Max production.
A New Vision for Hagrid
While Frost intends to honor Coltrane’s legacy, he has outlined a distinct creative path for his version of the character. Drawing from his own life and cinematic history, Frost revealed his Hagrid will feature a Bristol accent, departing from the West Country dialect popularized by Coltrane.
Frost’s interpretation is also influenced by the character John Coffey from The Green Mile, specifically focusing on a “huge but childlike” nature. He additionally cited his own Uncle Emy as a personal reference point for the character’s temperament. This version of Hagrid is expected to lean into the more complex, and at times physically imposing, aspects of the character found in J.K. Rowling’s original novels.
Expanding the Wizarding World
The upcoming series is scheduled to adapt J.K. Rowling’s original novels for HBO and Max.
The production recently moved into Season 2 casting, with Lenny Rush confirmed to play Dobby the house-elf and Bonnie Hill taking over the role of Ginny Weasley. These additions join the core trio of Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton, who will portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione respectively.
The project recently reached a new milestone with the release of a second official trailer on September 2, 2026. The focus remains on the debut season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for a new generation of viewers this Christmas.
