Paul Bettany has shared new details regarding the sudden departure of showrunner Jac Schaeffer from the upcoming Vision series. Bettany confirmed in a September 2026 interview that Schaeffer exited the project for “personal reasons,” a move that led to the appointment of Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas.
The transition, which occurred as the production prepared for its October 14, 2026, premiere on Disney+, was described by Bettany as a jarring experience. The actor noted that the change felt as though the “rug had been pulled from under my feet,” given Schaeffer’s instrumental role in defining the characters.
Despite the initial destabilization, the production pivoted quickly to Matalas. This creative pivot coincides with Schaeffer’s professional move outside of Marvel Studios; she signed a three-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios in February 2026.
A central component of the new series is the return of James Spader, who will reprise his role as the villainous artificial intelligence Ultron. According to production details, the relationship between Vision and his creator-antagonist has been reimagined for this outing.
The upcoming show, which has been colloquially referred to as VisionQuest, aims to resolve the cliffhanger of the “White Vision” and his search for purpose. The casting of Spader suggests a direct confrontation with the synthezoid’s origins, contrasting with the grief-stricken domesticity of the original series.
The series is scheduled to debut on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. While Bettany’s comments clarify the nature of the leadership change, the shift in showrunners marks a distinct tonal departure as the franchise moves forward.
