Charlie Hunnam has officially clarified that the upcoming project reuniting the Sons of Anarchy cast is not a traditional eighth season of the hit biker drama. The new series, titled Legends, is moving forward as a “meta-thriller” that bypasses the narrative finality of the original show’s 2014 series finale.
The distinction is critical for fans who remember the definitive deaths of several lead characters, including Hunnam’s Jax Teller and Ron Perlman’s Clay Morrow. Because a direct continuation of the SAMCRO storyline was impossible without ignoring the established ending, Legends adopts a format where the original cast members play fictionalized versions of themselves.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on September 10, Hunnam described the project as a “mad adventure” set 10 years after the conclusion of the original series. The plot follows the actors as they reunite for a fan convention, only to find themselves entangled in a real-world threat that proves more dangerous than any scenario their fictional characters faced on screen.
The production brings back a significant portion of the original ensemble. Joining Hunnam are Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. By appearing as themselves rather than their former characters, the actors are able to share the screen again regardless of whether their characters survived the events of the original FX series.
Original series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved as a writer or producer on Legends, but he has reportedly given the project and Hunnam his “full blessing.” This shift in creative leadership marks a new chapter for the franchise’s legacy while maintaining the core chemistry of the cast that fueled the show’s seven-season run.
The announcement comes during a high-profile period for Hunnam. In addition to developing this meta-thriller, the actor is currently promoting Monster Season 4, where he portrays Andrew Borden. That series is scheduled to premiere on September 17, 2026.
While Legends centers on a reunion of the Sons of Anarchy family, the series is expected to lean into the tension between the actors’ public personas and the gritty world of the fans they meet. By moving away from the motorcycle club hierarchy and into a contemporary thriller setting, the project allows the cast to explore their real-world bonds without undoing the definitive conclusion of the original story.
