Following the historic box office performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, industry reports have noted director Destin Daniel Cretton’s involvement with the next installment of the franchise. While Marvel and Sony have not yet officially confirmed a production start date, Cretton’s potential role has been highlighted in recent trade coverage.
According to a report from Deadline, Cretton’s involvement with the “inevitable next Spidey installment” was noted alongside his recently announced deal to develop a Hawaii Five-O feature film for Paramount.
The Record-Breaking Success of ‘Brand New Day’
The interest in Cretton’s involvement follows the massive commercial triumph of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Released on July 31, 2026, the film has grossed over $2.4 billion at the global box office. AP News reports that the film has quickly climbed the all-time rankings since its debut.
The film was notable for integrating major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) figures into Peter Parker’s street-level world, featuring a cast that included Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher.
Cretton’s Packed Production Schedule
While the director’s involvement in the Spider-Man franchise has been reported, the logistics of his schedule suggest a potential wait for the next chapter. In addition to his commitment to Hawaii Five-O, Cretton is also attached to other projects that will demand his attention.
Cretton is currently scheduled to direct the live-action adaptation of the popular manga and anime Naruto for Lionsgate. Production on that project is slated to begin in the first half of 2027.
Projected Release Window
Given the current release calendar and Cretton’s existing commitments, industry analysis suggests that Spider-Man 5 is unlikely to reach theaters before 2029.
