Blizzard Entertainment officially broke its long silence on the StarCraft franchise during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12. The studio announced a new, story-driven open-world shooter simply titled StarCraft. Moving away from the series’ real-time strategy roots, the title is currently scheduled for a Spring 2030 release.
The project is being led by Dan Hay, who previously served as an executive producer on the Far Cry series at Ubisoft. Hay’s transition to this project follows the cancellation of Blizzard’s survival game Odyssey, signaling a strategic pivot to utilize his expertise in open-world action for the StarCraft universe. The shift to a “boots-on-the-ground” perspective is intended to provide a more intimate look at the Koprulu Sector than the traditional top-down tactical view.

The reveal trailer leaned heavily into atmospheric world-building, presented in the style of Dominion recruitment propaganda. It concluded with the tagline “It’s about damn time,” a nod to the cinematic reveal of StarCraft II nearly two decades ago. While some initial speculation labeled the project as “StarCraft 3,” official branding throughout the ceremony used the standalone title StarCraft, emphasizing a new direction for the IP.
This announcement marks Blizzard’s third major attempt to bring the sci-fi setting into the shooter genre. The studio famously developed the stealth-action title StarCraft: Ghost in the early 2000s before putting it on indefinite hold. A later project codenamed Ares, which was reportedly a shooter in the vein of the Battlefield series, was also canceled in 2019. By setting a release window four years in the future, Blizzard appears to be signaling a long-term commitment to finally seeing the genre transition through to completion.
The StarCraft reveal was part of a broader 2026 roadmap presented during the event. Other highlights included the first official mention of Diablo V, which is currently slated for 2029, and World of Warcraft: Forever. The latter is described as a new iteration of the Classic experience and is scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026.
