Netflix and Sega have announced a major multi-title partnership intended to expand the reach of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and other classic Sega properties. Officially confirmed on September 14, 2026, the deal includes a new animated Sonic series specifically designed for an “upper preschool” audience, marking a demographic shift following the conclusion of the broader-targeted Sonic Prime in early 2024.
The upcoming Netflix series is being developed by Carlos Stevens alongside Sega head producer Toru Nakahara. While the official title has yet to be finalized, production teams describe the project as “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded.” This preschool-oriented direction serves as a foundational entry point for the brand, arriving as Sega prepares for a massive theatrical push in the following year.
Expanding the Sega-Netflix Universe
The collaboration between the streaming giant and the video game developer extends beyond the Blue Blur. The partnership includes a live-action film adaptation of the arcade classic Crazy Taxi and a live-action project based on Stranger Than Heaven. The latter is timed to coincide with the release of a new Stranger Than Heaven game, which is currently scheduled to launch in January 2027.
This surge in production follows the successful three-season run of Sonic Prime, which finished its story arc on Netflix in January 2024. By diversifying the target age groups across these adaptations, Sega appears to be positioning the franchise to maintain constant visibility leading up to its next major cinematic milestone.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and Legacy Characters
While the Netflix series focuses on younger viewers, the live-action cinematic universe is set to continue with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is scheduled for theatrical release on March 19, 2027. The sequel will see Ben Schwartz return to voice the title character, alongside significant new additions to the cast.
A major development for the fourth installment is the introduction of Amy Rose, who will be voiced by Kristen Bell. The film is expected to heighten the stakes for the core trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, as Metal Sonic is reported to be the primary antagonist for the 2027 sequel. This introduction of legacy characters from the video game series suggests the film will continue the trend of adapting major lore elements for the big screen.
