How to Filter Children’s Music from Your Spotify Recommendations

Spotify officially launched a global update on September 15, 2026, aimed at helping parents separate their personal music preferences from their children’s listening habits. The new “Kids & Family Music” toggle allows users to prevent nursery rhymes, lullabies, and Disney soundtracks from influencing their personalized recommendation algorithms and their annual Spotify Wrapped summaries.

The feature is available to both Free and Premium users on iOS and Android. It addresses a long-standing issue for users who share an account or play music for children on smart speakers, which often results in algorithms suggesting children’s content alongside the user’s actual favorite genres. According to the Spotify Newsroom, the tool is designed to give users more direct control over their “Taste Profile,” the data set Spotify uses to build playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar.

How to Access the New Toggle

The setting is located within the app’s privacy menus. Unlike previous manual methods that required users to exclude specific playlists one by one, this toggle applies a category-wide filter to kids’ content. To enable the filter, users should follow this path:

  • Open the Spotify app and tap your profile icon.
  • Select Settings and privacy.
  • Navigate to Content and display.
  • Locate the option labeled “Include kids and family music in taste profile” and switch it to the off position.

The setting is an “include” toggle by default, meaning users must manually switch it off to activate the exclusion. Once disabled, Spotify will stop using playback data from the “Kids & Family” category to influence future recommendations.

Retroactive Cleaning and Wrapped Impact

A significant aspect of this update is its retroactive capability. Switching the toggle off will remove previously played children’s music from being used in future recommendation calculations. This is particularly relevant for the upcoming 2026 Wrapped season; users who activate the filter now can effectively “clean” their data before the year-end summaries are generated.

However, there are technical nuances to how the data is handled. While the filter removes children’s content from “Top Artist” and “Top Song” rankings, the listening time spent on those tracks still contributes to the “total minutes played” metric in Spotify Wrapped. This ensures that a user’s overall engagement stats remain accurate even if the specific artists are hidden from the leaderboard.

Users should also note that changes to recommendations are not instantaneous. It may take up to 48 hours for the app’s algorithms to fully update and for the “Made for You” playlists to reflect the exclusion of family-oriented content. The feature also works across all devices linked to the account, including smart speakers and car systems, provided the primary account holder has adjusted the setting on their mobile device.

This update follows Spotify’s 2025 expansion of Managed Accounts for children under 13, further segmenting the platform’s experience for households. While Managed Accounts provide a completely separate space for kids, this new toggle offers a solution for those who prefer to use a single account but want to maintain the integrity of their personal music discovery.
