Lionsgate Limited is bringing the found-footage classic The Blair Witch Project back to fans next month through a multi-platform release that includes a definitive restoration and a return to movie theaters. The rollout begins on October 13, 2026, with the debut of a high-definition physical media collection, followed by a special theatrical event later in the month.
The upcoming “Definitive Collector’s Edition” will be released on October 13, 2026. This restoration is notable for its source material; rather than relying on previous digital masters, the 2024 cuts were sourced directly from the original Hi8 videotapes and 16mm film elements used during the 1999 production.
The Blu-ray set includes three distinct versions of the film:
- A filmmaker-approved 2024 theatrical cut.
- A festival cut.
- The original 35mm theatrical exhibition version that was shown in cinemas during the film’s initial wide release.
In a move catering to the film’s analog aesthetic, Lionsgate Limited is also releasing an exclusive VHS edition on October 13. This physical media return serves as a precursor to a wider theatrical celebration. Regal Cinemas has scheduled a special screening of the original 1999 film on October 25, 2026, as part of its “Screams on Screen” series, allowing audiences to experience the horror in a communal setting just before Halloween.
Connecting to the 2027 Reboot
This restoration effort acts as a bridge to the franchise’s future. A new Blair Witch reboot, produced by Blumhouse and Lionsgate, is currently scheduled for release on September 24, 2027. Directed by Dylan Clark, the project will see the return of the original 1999 team in advisory roles.
The involvement of original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, alongside creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, marks a significant development for the production. All four are serving as executive producers on the 2027 film.
While the new film remains a year away, the October 2026 releases aim to provide a comprehensive look at the original production’s technical roots. By offering versions derived from the original Hi8 tapes alongside the 35mm theatrical transfer, the new collection highlights the visual contrast between the raw footage captured by the actors and the polished version eventually distributed to theaters.
