Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed creator behind some of Prime Video’s most atmospheric horror and drama, is part of the creative team for the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 series. Flanagan is building the cinematic universe alongside star and executive producer Henry Cavill, as the production moves forward with the adaptation.
The production has reached significant internal milestones as it moves closer to filming. According to Games Workshop’s recent financial reporting, story outlines for the live-action series are now complete, allowing the project to transition into the scripting phase. This progression follows a rights deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop that was finalized in December 2024, granting Amazon the path to develop both film and television content based on the “grimdark” sci-fi franchise.
Flanagan joined the Warhammer 40,000 project in July 2026 as a writer and executive producer, with the potential to direct. His involvement is viewed as a creative pairing with Cavill, who has been officially confirmed to play the lead role in addition to his duties as an executive producer. Cavill’s deep personal familiarity with the tabletop game’s lore has been a driving force behind the project since its inception.
Amazon’s plans for the franchise extend beyond a single live-action narrative. A separate animated series titled Deathwatch is also in active development. This companion project is reported to involve director Dave Wilson and writer John Orloff, suggesting a multi-platform approach to the 41st millennium. United Artists and Vertigo Entertainment are also part of the production hierarchy for the live-action development, ensuring a high-level creative infrastructure for the series.
Fans of Flanagan’s work will likely see his creative touch on Prime Video before the Warhammer series arrives. His adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie is currently scheduled to premiere on the platform on October 7, 2026. This timeline suggests that while the scripting for Warhammer 40,000 is underway, the actual production of the series will follow Flanagan’s established obligations, allowing the creative team time to refine the complex world-building required for the Space Marines and the various factions of the Imperium.
