Neagley Spin-Off Reverses Reacher Franchise Audience Sentiment Trend

The Reacher universe has officially expanded with the premiere of Neagley. All eight episodes of the debut season arrived on Prime Video on September 16, 2026, coinciding with the finale of Reacher Season 4.

According to initial Rotten Tomatoes data, Neagley debuted with an 84% audience score. While the first season of the parent show remains a fan favorite at 91%, Reacher Season 2 saw a notable drop in audience sentiment, falling to 78%.

The positive reception appears tied to a shift in narrative focus. Unlike the main series, which adapts specific novels by Lee Child, Neagley tells an original story developed specifically for the screen. The plot follows Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, as she operates as a private investigator in Chicago. The central mystery revolves around the suspicious death of her childhood friend, Tommy Crane, forcing the character to rely on her technical prowess and investigative instincts rather than the “explosive team” dynamic that defined later seasons of Reacher.

This character-driven approach allows for a deeper exploration of Neagley’s personal history and her haphephobia, or fear of touch, which has been a recurring trait of the character since her introduction. While the show focuses on her independent work, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Alan Ritchson does make a guest appearance as Jack Reacher, maintaining the connective tissue between the two series.

Franchise Rebound

The success of the spin-off comes at a time of renewed interest in the property. Despite the lower audience score during Reacher Season 2, the main series also saw a significant rebound this year. Reacher Season 4 reached a 91% audience score upon its conclusion, suggesting that both the flagship and its first spin-off have found a rhythm that resonates with long-term viewers.

By moving the setting to Chicago, the spin-off has distinguished itself from the nomadic nature of Jack Reacher’s adventures. This grounded, metropolitan setting provides a different tonal atmosphere than the rural or industrial backdrops typically associated with the franchise.
