Apple Original Films’ upcoming biographical thriller Tenzing is moving toward its official release following a high-profile festival circuit run. The film, which dramatizes the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, had its world premiere at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival on September 4, 2026, and was recently featured as a primary selection at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The production is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 9, 2026. Following this window, the film will premiere globally on the Apple TV+ streaming service on October 16, 2026. Trailers released on September 16, 2026, have showcased the production’s focus on the grueling environmental conditions and the central partnership between the two men who reached the summit.
A New Perspective on the Everest Narrative
While the story of the 1953 expedition is a well-known historical event, director Jennifer Peedom has framed this adaptation to center on the perspective of Tenzing Norgay. The film stars Genden Phuntsok as Norgay, while Tom Hiddleston portrays Sir Edmund Hillary. This shift in viewpoint aims to provide a more nuanced look at the Sherpa’s role in the expedition compared to traditional Western-centric accounts.
The supporting cast features Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt, the leader of the British expedition, and CaitrÃona Balfe as Jill Henderson. Peedom brings significant experience to the project, having previously directed the critically acclaimed 2015 documentary Sherpa, which explored the lives and risks of those working on the mountain.
To capture the scale and atmosphere of the Himalayas, the production was filmed on location in Nepal. Scenes were shot in Kathmandu and across the Khumbu region, providing authentic backdrops for the survival elements of the thriller. The film explores not only the physical ascent but also the cultural and personal motivations that drove Norgay and Hillary to the world’s highest peak.
