HBO has officially announced a significant expansion of the cast for the third and final season of The Last of Us, integrating Hollywood veteran John Goodman alongside two pivotal stars from the original video games who will return in entirely new roles.
The announcement, made on September 26, 2026, to coincide with the franchise’s annual “The Last of Us Day,” confirms that the series is bringing back Laura Bailey and Ian Alexander. While both actors provided the voice and motion capture for central characters in the 2020 sequel The Last of Us Part II, they will portray different figures in the live-action adaptation’s concluding act.
Legacy Recasting and New Roles
Laura Bailey, who won numerous awards for her performance as the antagonist-turned-protagonist Abby Anderson in the games, will take on the role of Elizabeth. The character is described as a high-ranking leader within the Seraphites, the fanatical religious sect that plays a major role in the ongoing conflict. This casting creates a thematic bridge for fans, as Bailey’s original character, Abby, was the Seraphites’ primary adversary in the game’s narrative.
Ian Alexander, who originally portrayed the young Seraphite exile Lev, will also return to the production but as a new character named Paco. Alexander’s transition to a new role stems from the actor aging out of the part of Lev, who is approximately 13 years old in the story. According to more game alums joining the production, the live-action version of Lev will now be played by Kyriana Kratter.
Alexander’s new character, Paco, will be paired with John Goodman’s character, Joey. The duo is reportedly known as the “Heroes of the Highway,” an original addition to the series that was not featured in the source material.
Final Season Production Details
HBO has clarified that Season 3 is planned to serve as the series finale. The final episodes are currently expected to premiere in the spring of 2027. This timeline follows several shifts in the production’s creative leadership and cast.
Neil Druckmann, the creator of the game franchise and co-creator of the television series, has stepped back from showrunning duties for the final season. This move allows Druckmann to focus on the next Naughty Dog game. While he remains involved in the franchise, his daily creative oversight on the HBO set has been reduced.
In addition to the arrival of Goodman and the returning game stars, the final season will see a change in the established cast. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has been cast as Manny, taking over the role from Danny Ramirez, who played the character in the second season. These changes come as the production prepares to wrap up the adaptation of the second game’s sprawling narrative, which HBO executives have opted to conclude with this third installment.
