Niamh O’Brien, the accomplished dancer and wife of Lord of the Dance creator Michael Flatley, has died at the age of 52. O’Brien passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at Beacon Hospital in Dublin following a period of illness.
Flatley shared the news on social media, describing his grief in a tribute to his partner of 20 years. “My heart is broken,” the dancer wrote. “I have lost my best friend and the love of my life. Niamh was the light of my life and the soul of our family.”

According to the Irish Independent, O’Brien had been hospitalized for several weeks prior to her passing. She was reportedly just hours away from boarding a flight to the United States to receive specialist medical treatment when her condition deteriorated. While a spokesperson for the family acknowledged her “sudden passing,” it was noted that she had been battling an ongoing illness throughout the autumn.
A Partnership in Life and Dance
O’Brien was a world-class talent in her own right long before her marriage to Flatley. She was a prominent member of the original Riverdance troupe and later secured the leading role of Saoirse in Lord of the Dance. It was through these major productions that she and Flatley developed their professional and personal relationship.
The couple married in October 2006 at St Patrick’s Church in Fermoy, County Cork, in a ceremony that drew international attention. They shared one son together, Michael St James Flatley, born in 2007. Throughout their marriage, O’Brien remained a private but constant support for Flatley, particularly during his own recent health challenges involving an aggressive form of cancer.

Earlier in 2026, Flatley had publicly expressed his desire to renew their wedding vows to celebrate their upcoming 20th anniversary, often citing her as the foundation of his recovery and career longevity. In recent years, the family spent much of their time at their historic Castlehyde estate in County Cork.
Tributes from the Irish entertainment industry have begun to surface following the news. High-profile figures including actress Victoria Smurfit and presenter Angela Scanlon were among those sharing condolences with the Flatley family. Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly finalized, as the family has requested privacy during this time.
