Blumhouse has officially secured director Craig Zobel to lead its live-action feature film adaptation of the bestselling horror comic Something Is Killing the Children. The announcement, made during the Blumfest panel at New York Comic Con on October 9, 2026, marks the most significant development for the property since Blumhouse acquired the rights in 2025.
Zobel joins the project following high-profile success with DC’s The Penguin and HBO’s Mare of Easttown. His involvement signals a definitive transition for the franchise, which famously languished in “development hell” for several years at Netflix. Between 2021 and 2024, the streaming giant attempted to adapt the series with various creative teams, including Mike Flanagan and the creators of Dark, before officially scrapping the project in late 2024.
Building the ‘Slaughterverse’ Strategy
Blumhouse is pursuing a dual-track development strategy for the property, aiming to establish a multi-format “Slaughterverse.” In addition to Zobel’s live-action film, the studio is developing an adult animated series. Comic creator James Tynion IV is directly involved in this expansion, spearheading the animated side to ensure the adaptation remains faithful to the source material’s tone.

The live-action film will specifically adapt the “Archer’s Peak” saga, which serves as the opening arc of the comic series. Since its debut in 2019, the comic has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, centering on Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter who arrives in a small town where children are being hunted by creatures only they can see.
Production Details and Character Confirmation
The move to Blumhouse has also brought clarity to the creative direction of the film. Reports indicate that the character “Octo,” a fan-favorite element from the comics, is confirmed to appear in the live-action adaptation.
While previous attempts to bring the story to the screen struggled to move past the scripting phase, the current “two-pronged” approach suggests a more stable production model. With the creator of the comic actively involved in the animated companion piece, the studio appears focused on maintaining the specific horror aesthetic that made the BOOM! Studios title a massive hit with readers.
