Paramount+ has officially renewed Star Trek: Starfleet Academy for a second season, confirming that the sophomore outing will serve as the series’ final chapter. The announcement, made during the 2026 New York Comic Con panel, sets a premiere window for March 2027 and signals a significant shift in setting as the cadets move their training from Earth to the stars.
The final season will transition the narrative from the San Francisco campus to the USS Athena. According to executive producer Alex Kurtzman, the second season will follow the cadets through their sophomore year, focusing heavily on flight training and elite maneuvers. Central to this development is the return of Nova Squadron, the flight team infamous in Star Trek lore for its role in a fatal 24th-century training accident.

Kurtzman described a specific Season 2 episode featuring the group as “Top Gun in space,” which reportedly includes a major space chase sequence. For long-term fans, the resurrection of Nova Squadron carries heavy thematic weight. The group was first introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The First Duty,” where a group of elite cadets—including Wesley Crusher—attempted a forbidden flight maneuver known as the Kolvoord Starburst. The resulting crash killed one cadet and led to a high-profile cover-up that remains one of the Academy’s most notorious historical failures.
The production also confirmed major additions to the cast for the final season. Bill Nighy joins the ensemble as Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Captain Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter. Additionally, Rosemarie DeWitt has been cast as Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed and the mother of cadet Tarima Sadal. These casting choices suggest the series will delve into the personal legacies and familial pressures of the 32nd-century cadets as they prepare for active service.

The decision to conclude the series after two seasons aligns with the show’s focus on a specific cohort’s journey through the Academy. By moving the action to the USS Athena, the writers intend to contrast the safe, academic environment of Season 1 with the practical, high-stakes reality of deep-space operations.
While the show is set in the far future established by Star Trek: Discovery, the inclusion of Nova Squadron suggests the institution is still grappling with the balance between excellence and the dangerous hubris of its most talented students. This return to a controversial piece of Academy history provides a narrative bridge to the franchise’s past while pushing the cadets toward their final graduation.
