ABC has officially scheduled the return of its police procedural franchise for early 2027, anchoring a new Wednesday night programming block. The Rookie Season 9 is set to premiere on January 6, 2027, at 9 PM ET, followed immediately by the series premiere of the new expansion, The Rookie: North, at 10 PM ET.
The Season 9 premiere will pick up directly from the Season 8 finale cliffhanger. The immediate narrative focus will be the LAPD’s high-stakes search for Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) following their abduction by the convict Everett. This resolution is expected to set the tone for the season as the team deals with the fallout of the kidnapping.

New Faces in Season 9
The upcoming season introduces significant changes to the LAPD Mid-Wilshire station’s roster. Troian Bellisario joins the cast in a recurring capacity as Stephanie Monroe, a single mother who becomes John Nolan’s new rookie. Additionally, Dulé Hill has been cast as Lt. Hughes, who will serve as the station’s new Watch Commander.
While the main series continues to follow the established ensemble in Los Angeles, the midseason return marks the first time the franchise has operated with a dedicated back-to-back block on Wednesday nights, a shift from its previous scheduling patterns.
Expansion into the Pacific Northwest
The Rookie: North marks a geographical departure for the franchise, moving the action from California to Pierce County, Washington. The spinoff stars Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who decides to join the police force later in life after surviving a violent home invasion.
The spinoff’s ensemble cast features:
- Janet Montgomery
- Chris Sullivan
- Karen Fukuhara
- Froy Gutierrez
- Mya Lowe
- Malik Watson
To establish the link between the two series, Nathan Fillion is confirmed to appear as John Nolan in the pilot episode of The Rookie: North. Production has also confirmed that Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter will make crossover appearances as Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford at various points during the spinoff’s inaugural season. This connectivity is intended to bridge the gap between the veteran LAPD characters and the new recruits in Washington.
