Davina McCall Details Severe Memory Loss and Breast Cancer Diagnosis During 2025 Recovery

Davina McCall has opened up about the profound cognitive challenges she faced throughout 2025, describing a period of memory loss so severe she likened the experience to “advanced Alzheimer’s.” The presenter revealed that her recovery from major brain surgery was further complicated by a subsequent breast cancer diagnosis, marking the past year as the most difficult of her life.

Speaking on the Mad, Sad and Bad podcast in October 2026, McCall detailed the “grueling reality” of the months following her November 2024 operation to remove a benign colloid cyst. While the tumor was non-cancerous, McCall emphasized that the nature of the surgery and the ensuing “blackout” period were far from benign in their impact on her daily life.

During the peak of her recovery in early 2025, McCall reportedly struggled with significant short-term memory deficits. She described being unable to remember the names of the hospital staff treating her or the frequent visits from her husband, Michael Douglas. This period of cognitive impairment meant she was unable to follow the plots of movies or read books for approximately six months. McCall clarified that while she does not have a clinical neurodegenerative diagnosis, the comparison to “advanced Alzheimer’s” was the only way she could accurately convey the depth of her memory loss to others.

A Dual Health Battle in 2025

The presenter’s recovery was made even more arduous by a breast cancer diagnosis later in 2025. McCall noted that navigating a secondary health crisis while still attempting to regain her cognitive functions created an overwhelming physical and emotional burden. She spent much of the year out of the public eye, focusing entirely on a recovery process that required unconventional methods to restore her mental sharpness.

To combat the cognitive “fog,” McCall turned to what she termed “mind physio.” She credited singing lessons and the regular use of music as essential tools in helping her brain rewire itself. These sessions were designed to stimulate different neural pathways, eventually allowing her to process information and retain memories more effectively.

A significant breakthrough finally occurred in October 2025. McCall recalled that it was the first time since her surgery that she woke up and could clearly remember the events and conversations of the previous day. While she continues to discuss the long-term impact of her “hardest year” in recent interviews, that milestone marked the end of the most severe “blackout” phase of her recovery.
