Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Devs Used ‘Hot’ Character Designs to Drive Fan Engagement

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse was developed by Evil Empire in partnership with Konami and released on October 15, 2026. While the game returns to the series’ gothic roots, its developers at Evil Empire have been remarkably candid about a specific design philosophy: they intentionally made the characters “hot” to resonate with modern fandom.

Developed in partnership with Konami, the title follows Rose Belmont, the daughter of Trevor Belmont, as she navigates 1499 Paris—roughly 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. According to Lead Designer Sandro Bordier, the attractive character designs were a deliberate “vibe” the team worked toward from the beginning of production.

The team anticipated that striking designs would lead to a surge in community-created content.

The “Hot Dad” Marketing Strategy

In a recent interview with Fall Damage, the development team discussed the intersection of character design and community engagement. Marketing Director Berenger Dupre joked that the industry needs a “hot dads” category at The Game Awards, specifically referencing the rugged, updated look for Trevor Belmont. This aesthetic choice was not accidental; the developers reportedly anticipated that the “eye-catching” designs would spark a wave of fan activity.

The team confirmed they have already seen a “tsunami” of fan art, including suggestive or “horny” illustrations, following the initial character reveals. Rather than being caught off guard, the developers suggested that this level of engagement was exactly what they expected when they leaned into the “hotness” of the Belmont lineage and its adversaries.

Legacy and Gameplay Features

Evil Empire, the workers’ cooperative known for Dead Cells, took the lead on Belmont’s Curse following their work on the Return to Castlevania DLC. This new standalone title bridges the gap between classic gameplay and modern visual appeal, featuring unlockable skins that allow players to dress Rose in costumes inspired by iconic figures like Alucard, Sonia Belmont, and her father, Trevor.
