DC Studios Sets Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis for New Gods Transmedia Roles

DC Studios has officially cast Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis as the leads for its upcoming adult animated series, Mister Miracle. The announcement, confirmed by DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, marks the first major step in bringing Jack Kirby’s Fourth World mythology into the unified DC Universe (DCU).

Hutcherson will voice Scott Free, the master escape artist known as Mister Miracle, while Davis has been cast as Big Barda, a former leader of the Female Furies. This casting follows the established “transmedia” strategy of DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, where actors are selected with the intent to portray their characters across animation, live-action films, and television series.

The series is an eight-episode adult animated project written entirely by Tom King, who also serves as the showrunner. King, who is currently serving as a co-creator on the DCU series Lanterns, previously wrote a critically acclaimed, Eisner-winning Mister Miracle comic book run in 2017. While the show is an adaptation of that source material, it is being produced as a core entry in the “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” slate rather than a standalone project.

The production is being handled by Titmouse, the animation studio behind The Legend of Vox Machina. In addition to the leads, Nathan Fillion is confirmed to reprise his role as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the series. This crossover reinforces the continuity between Mister Miracle and other upcoming DCU projects, such as the Superman feature film and the Lanterns live-action series, where Fillion is also set to appear.

By casting Hutcherson and Davis now, DC Studios is positioning the pair to eventually transition the New Gods into the live-action landscape. This mirrors previous casting decisions, such as Frank Grillo’s role as Rick Flag Sr., which spans across Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman.

Mister Miracle is expected to premiere on Max in 2027. The project signifies a deepening of Tom King’s creative influence within the DCU’s architectural planning, as he moves from the writers’ room of Lanterns to the primary creative seat for his own signature property.
