The small orange dot appearing on the left side of a Samsung Galaxy Watch face is a notification indicator. It serves as a visual cue that there are unread alerts waiting for review, ranging from text messages and missed calls to app updates and system warnings.
Interacting with the indicator is straightforward: swiping right from the main watch face opens the notification panel. Once the unread notifications are viewed or cleared, the orange dot automatically disappears. This behavior remains the standard interface element in the latest software versions, including One UI 6 Watch based on Wear OS 5, which powers the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.

How to Disable or Customize the Orange Dot
While the indicator is designed to be helpful, some users prefer a cleaner watch face without persistent icons. Samsung allows users to toggle this feature off through the companion app on a connected smartphone. To hide the indicator, follow these steps:
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone.
- Navigate to Watch settings.
- Tap on Notifications.
- Select Advanced notification settings.
- Toggle the Notification indicator switch to the off position.
When this setting is disabled, the watch will still receive notifications, and you can still access them by swiping right, but the orange dot will no longer appear on the watch face. This setting also applies to the Always On Display (AOD) mode on supported models.
Distinguishing the Orange Dot from the Green Dot
It is common for users to confuse the orange notification dot with a green dot that occasionally appears, typically near the top right of the screen. These two indicators serve very different purposes. While the orange dot is informational, the green dot is a privacy indicator.
The green dot signifies that an application is currently accessing a sensitive sensor, such as the microphone, camera, or location services. This is a security feature intended to alert users if an app is recording audio or tracking GPS coordinates in the background. If you see a green dot and are not actively using an app that requires those permissions, it may be a prompt to check which apps have active permissions in your watch’s settings menu.
Why the Orange Dot Might Persist
If the orange dot remains visible even after you have checked your latest messages, it is usually because of a system-level alert. These can include notifications that a software update is ready for installation, a warning that the watch battery is low, or alerts from the Google Play Store regarding app updates. Checking the notification tray thoroughly and clearing all items should resolve a persistent indicator.
