CMA Tribute Honors Dolly Parton’s Legacy as the Great Unifier

The global entertainment community gathered in Nashville on Wednesday night for a televised tribute to Dolly Parton, celebrating the late country icon’s legacy as the “Great Unifier.” The special, titled CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, aired live on October 21, 2026, from the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University.

The event follows the death of the legendary singer-songwriter on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. The tribute sought to capture the cross-generational appeal Parton maintained throughout her career, bringing together traditional country royalty and modern pop stars to honor her influence on music and philanthropy.

Performances and Personal Tributes

The evening featured several cornerstone performances of Parton’s most famous compositions. Carrie Underwood delivered a rendition of the event’s titular track, “I Will Always Love You,” while Reba McEntire performed “He’s Alive,” a song she noted was a reflection of her long-standing personal friendship with Parton.

Beyond the music, the special highlighted Parton’s impact on Hollywood. Julia Roberts appeared to share a personal story from the set of the 1989 film Steel Magnolias. Roberts recounted how Parton provided her with a lasting lesson on professionalism and the importance of gratitude.

Bridging Generations

One of the night’s most significant moments involved pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter, who made a surprise appearance. Carpenter’s involvement highlighted Parton’s continued relevance to younger audiences; the two had collaborated in 2025 on a country-remix version of Carpenter’s hit “Please Please Please,” which appeared on the deluxe edition of the album Short n’ Sweet.

The “Great Unifier” theme was further supported by the event’s charitable component. All proceeds from the tribute were designated for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy program Parton founded in 1995 that has distributed hundreds of millions of books to children worldwide.

The Country Music Association organized the event as a standalone celebration, separate from the annual CMA Awards ceremony typically held in November.
