Square Enix restored login services for Final Fantasy XIV at approximately 5:16 a.m. PDT on October 22, 2026, following a critical technical outage that left thousands of PC players locked out of the game. While the maintenance successfully addressed underlying server vulnerabilities, the downtime sparked a widespread community rescue effort known as the “PHP Watering Service” to save vulnerable in-game crops from perishing.
The disruption began on October 21, 2026, when Square Enix suspended login servers to address vulnerabilities related to PHP. While the issue prevented new logins on PC, Mac, and Steam, it did not immediately disconnect players who were already logged in. Furthermore, console users—including those on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the FINAL FANTASY XIV Nintendo Switch 2—were largely able to maintain access, creating a divide between those stuck outside the game and those still within it.

The primary concern for locked-out players involved the game’s gardening mechanics. In Final Fantasy XIV, crops planted in outdoor garden patches must be watered at least once every 24 hours. If a plant is neglected beyond this window, it enters a “wilt” state, signified by a purple glow; if it is not tended to within another 24 hours after wilting, the crop dies and the investment is lost. Because many rare plants require multiple days of real-time growth, a prolonged outage posed a significant risk to player resources.
The ‘PHP Watering Service’
To mitigate these losses, players who remained online coordinated through community hubs like Reddit to form a makeshift “PHP Watering Service.” Volunteers traveled across various servers and housing wards, visiting the plots of players who reported being unable to log in. Because the game allows any player to water a garden patch located outside a house—even if they do not have administrative rights to the property—the community was able to keep thousands of plants alive through collective effort.
These volunteers used public threads to track which housing wards had been “swept” and which specific plots still required attention. This grassroots response highlighted a long-standing trait of the game’s culture, where players often prioritize social cooperation during technical instabilities.
Square Enix also took internal measures to protect player assets during the emergency maintenance. The developer officially paused the automatic housing demolition timer on all worlds as a precaution. This timer normally reclaims player housing if the owner does not enter the property for 45 days, but it was suspended to ensure that no one lost their virtual home due to the inability to bypass the login servers.
While the emergency patch server maintenance is now complete and logins have returned to normal, the suspension of the housing demolition timer remains a standard protective measure until the developers confirm total stability across all platforms.
