Donnie Wahlberg Sets High Bar for Tom Selleck’s Potential Return in Boston Blue

Donnie Wahlberg has clarified the specific creative requirements necessary to bring Tom Selleck’s iconic Frank Reagan back to the screen. Speaking about the future of the spinoff series Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg revealed that while a reunion remains a high priority for fans and producers alike, the return of the Reagan patriarch depends entirely on the quality of the narrative.

In a recent interview with People, Wahlberg emphasized that any appearance by Selleck must be “thoughtful, elegant,” and “really special.” This standard aims to honor the legacy of the original Blue Bloods series while ensuring Selleck’s presence feels earned rather than forced. Showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier have echoed this sentiment, describing a potential Selleck guest spot as “wish fulfillment” that is contingent on finding the right script.

Expanding the Reagan Universe in Season 2

The Blue Bloods expansion has built significant momentum since its premiere in October 2025. Currently in its second season, Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan’s transition to the Boston Police Department—a move motivated by a desire to reconnect with his son, Sean, who is currently serving as a rookie officer. The series has already seen appearances from other family mainstays, including Henry and Erin Reagan, as well as Maria Baez.

The spinoff recently reached a major milestone during its Season 2 premiere on October 9, 2026, which saw Danny Reagan promoted to the rank of sergeant detective. The procedural’s ensemble has also grown to include Sonequa Martin-Green as Danny’s partner, Lena Silver, and veteran actor Ernie Hudson.

Fans of the original series have another confirmed reunion to look forward to next month. Will Estes is officially set to reprise his role as Jamie Reagan. His return is scheduled for Season 2, Episode 5, which will air on November 11, 2026.

The Hurdles for Frank Reagan’s Return

Despite Wahlberg’s optimism and the increasing number of family cameos, bringing Frank Reagan into the fold remains a more complex challenge. In late 2025, Tom Selleck expressed personal reservations about continuing the character beyond the flagship show’s conclusion. During an interview with Hour Detroit, Selleck stated he did not feel it was his “lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan” in a spinoff capacity, referring to the new production as “another show.”

This previous reluctance contrasts with the creative team’s current efforts to lure the actor back. Beyond the narrative “catch” identified by Wahlberg, the production must navigate Selleck’s desire to maintain the integrity of his character’s retirement. While Frank Reagan has been mentioned frequently throughout the first two seasons of Boston Blue, he has yet to appear on screen. For now, the door remains open, provided the story meets the high bar set by the Reagan family’s long-standing television history.
