Baywatch Returns to Fox in January 2027 with Hobie Buchannon Legacy Story

Fox has officially scheduled the return of the iconic lifeguard drama Baywatch, setting a premiere date of Wednesday, January 6, 2027. The reboot will occupy the 9:00 p.m. ET/PT time slot, marking the franchise’s return to broadcast television nearly 25 years after the original series concluded its run.

The new series, a co-production between Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, is designed as a dramatic sequel rather than a comedic parody. The first season will consist of 12 episodes, with each installment becoming available for streaming on Hulu the day after its initial broadcast.

A Legacy-Driven Storyline

The reboot centers on a “passing of the torch” narrative, bridging the gap between the classic 1990s era and the present day. Stephen Amell stars as Hobie Buchannon, the son of original protagonist Mitch Buchannon. Now serving as a Baywatch Captain, Hobie’s life is upended by the arrival of Charlie Vale, played by Jessica Belkin. Charlie is revealed to be Hobie’s long-lost daughter, and the season’s primary arc follows her attempts to join the elite life-saving team under her father’s leadership.

Matt Nix, known for his work on Burn Notice, serves as the series showrunner and executive producer. The premiere episode was directed by McG, who also executive produces the project. While the series introduces a new generation of lifeguards, it maintains continuity with the original show’s history, focusing on high-stakes rescues and personal drama at the beach.

Cast and Returning Characters

The ensemble cast blends established television actors with modern social media personalities and athletes. Joining Amell and Belkin are Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison, Thaddeus LaGrone, and Brooks Nader. The production has also tapped into digital-native audiences by casting TikTok star Noah Beck and NCAA gymnast Livvy Dunne in recurring roles.

Longtime fans will see familiar faces as several original cast members are confirmed to reprise their roles. Erika Eleniak returns as Shauni McClain and David Chokachi reprises his role as Cody Madison. Other returning stars include Michael Bergin as J.D. Darius and Kelly Packard as April Giminski. These veteran characters are expected to appear in guest or recurring capacities to help establish the new team’s place within the established Baywatch lore.

The production solidified with Nix at the helm.
