As production for the third season of The Last of Us continues in British Columbia, returning star Gabriel Luna has offered a glimpse into the dramatic narrative shift awaiting his character, Tommy Miller. Following the events of the second season, which concluded its seven-episode run on May 25, 2025, the series is moving toward a perspective shift that reframes the younger Miller brother as a terrifying force of nature.
Luna stated that Tommy transitions into a “boogeyman” figure from the perspective of the show’s opposing factions. While viewers have long seen Tommy as a protective hero and a foundational piece of the Jackson community, Season 3 will adopt the viewpoint of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). For these new antagonists, Tommy is no longer a family man, but a lethal, ghost-like sniper haunting the ruins of Seattle.
The Perspective Shift in Season 3
This transformation aligns with the narrative structure of the source material, though the television adaptation has added specific personal stakes for Tommy. In a departure from the original game, the series introduced a son for Tommy and Maria, a detail that is expected to further inform the character’s lethal motivations and desperation during his mission in Seattle.
Behind the scenes, the production has seen a shift in leadership and set dynamics. Gabriel Luna described co-star Bella Ramsey as “the general” of the Season 3 set, noting that Ramsey has taken on a significant leadership role during filming. The administrative structure has also evolved; in July 2025, Neil Druckmann stepped away from active co-showrunning duties to focus on projects at Naughty Dog, leaving Craig Mazin as the sole showrunner for the third season.

The cast is also seeing changes in key roles. Due to scheduling conflicts with previous actor Danny Ramirez, the character Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has been cast as Manny for the upcoming season. Manny is a central member of the WLF and a close ally to Abby Anderson, serving as a primary lens through which the audience will witness the “boogeyman” version of Tommy.
Principal photography for the third season began in March 2026 and is currently scheduled to wrap on November 27, 2026. While fans are eager to see the continuation of the story, HBO has confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 is officially slated for a 2027 premiere. The extended production timeline suggests another high-scale effort to bring the complex, dual-perspective narrative of the Seattle conflict to the screen.
