Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming Apple TV+ series Ascension centers on the investigation of a mysterious 20th-century cult. Bill Nighy is set to play Zac, a documentarian who hires the series lead, Rose, portrayed by Caitríona Balfe. Rose is a filmmaker tasked with exploring the history of the cult, a journey that serves as the central narrative arc of the series.

Creative Direction and Source Material

Ascension is being developed under Alfonso Cuarón’s overall deal with Apple TV+. Cuarón serves as an executive producer and is co-writing the series alongside his brother, Carlos Cuarón. The production is a collaboration between Apple Studios, Esperanto Filmoj, and Anonymous Content.

Natalie Erika James and Christian White serve as co-showrunners and writers for the project. James, who is also the lead director, has established a reputation in the horror and psychological thriller genres through her work on Relic and Apartment 7A. The series is inspired by Adam Nevill’s 2012 novel Last Days, which won the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel. The book is noted for its claustrophobic atmosphere and its focus on the lingering psychological and supernatural trauma left behind by cult organizations.

This project marks another significant entry in Cuarón’s television slate following the release of the limited series Disclaimer. By pairing a multi-Academy Award-winning creator with showrunners specialized in atmospheric horror, the series appears positioned to lean into the “prestige horror” subgenre that has become a staple of recent streaming lineups.
