Sony’s long-gestating adaptation of the gothic horror hit Bloodborne has moved into a new phase of production, officially securing both a director and a writer. The update, confirmed in late October 2026, marks the first major milestone for the project since it was formally announced earlier this year.
Producer Seán McLoughlin, also known as Jacksepticeye, confirmed the hires during a recent interview with IGN. While McLoughlin noted that the creative team is now in place to move the project forward, the identities of the director and writer are currently being kept secret by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.

Unlike several other high-profile gaming adaptations currently in development, the Bloodborne film is confirmed to be an R-rated animated feature. This distinction clarifies years of speculation regarding whether the project would be live-action. The film is being co-produced by Lyrical Animation, a move that aligns the project with a growing trend of stylized, mature animation in the gaming-to-film space.
The decision to pursue an animated format reportedly allows the production to better capture the surreal, Lovecraftian aesthetic of the 2015 game. Rather than a shot-for-shot retelling of the original game’s plot, the film is expected to explore new stories set within the decaying city of Yharnam and its surrounding lore.
The project is part of a broader push by Sony to bring FromSoftware’s “Soulslike” titles to the screen. The 2026 production slate also includes a live-action Elden Ring film directed by Alex Garland and the Sekiro: No Defeat series. The Bloodborne adaptation originally broke cover during an announcement at CinemaCon in April 2026, roughly 11 years after the game first debuted on the PlayStation 4.
While a specific release window has not been provided, the hiring of a core creative team suggests the project is exiting the conceptual stage. Industry observers suggest that a formal reveal of the director and writer may be reserved for a major event later this year, potentially during The Game Awards in December.
