A new 80-minute feature exploring the legacy of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic is arriving on digital platforms just ahead of the franchise’s next major theatrical milestone. Dune: The Real Story, a documentary produced by Trinity Content, is scheduled for a digital and iTunes release on December 7, 2026.

The documentary serves as a historical retrospective rather than a continuation of the current film series. It focuses on the franchise’s long and often troubled production history, detailing the various attempts to adapt the novel for the screen. This includes deep dives into the legendary unproduced project by Alejandro Jodorowsky, as well as the realized versions and concepts from directors Ridley Scott and David Lynch.

Distinguishing the Documentary from Dune: Part Three

The timing of the digital release has created some confusion among fans, as it falls in the same month as the most anticipated science-fiction sequel of the year. While Dune: The Real Story arrives on December 7, the high-budget blockbuster Dune: Part Three is scheduled to premiere in theaters and IMAX just 11 days later, on December 18, 2026.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Three is expected to adapt the events of Herbert’s second novel, Dune Messiah. Unlike the 80-minute documentary, the theatrical film is a continuation of the narrative established in Villeneuve’s previous two installments. Reports indicate the cast will expand to include Robert Pattinson, who is expected to portray the Face Dancer Scytale.

IMAX Double Feature and Sneak Peek

To prepare audiences for the upcoming sequel, Warner Bros. and IMAX are organizing a special theatrical event. Starting November 13, 2026, the first two films in the Villeneuve trilogy—Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two—will return to IMAX theaters for a limited engagement.

This re-release event is designed as a double feature and will include an exclusive sneak peek at Dune: Part Three. Fans attending these screenings will be among the first to see footage from the new film before it officially arrives in mid-December. Between the historical context provided by the Real Story documentary and the theatrical return of the main series, December 2026 is shaping up to be a significant month for the franchise.
